RAIL TRANSPORTA- TION |
There are rail routes in the Spokane-Pasco corridor serving the northern Palouse Economic Development Council region. The Great Northwest Railroad (formerly known as the Camas Prairie Railroad) serves the central area (north of the Snake River) and central Idaho through Lewiston. The State of Washington purchased the Palouse River and Coulee City Railroad and will use public monies for maintenance and updating. The Palouse River and Coulee City Railroad will operate both of these lines under the name of Blue Mountain Railroad. The Blue Mountain railroad serves the southern area (south of the Snake River) from Wallula east through Walla Walla to Dayton. One major railroad company, Burlington Northern-Sante Fe, and three short line railroads, the Camas Prairie RailNet, the Palouse River-Coulee City Railroad, and the Blue Mountain Railroad provide the rail service. Cargoes handled on these lines include grain, brewing barley and wheat, dried peas, lentils, lumber, coal, canned asparagus and fertilizer. The port in Columbia County at Lyons Ferry ships five million bushels of small grains per year. LOCAL AREA RAIL LINE MAP
